Our definition of ‘institution’ has been intentionally broad, but as a baseline students have been asked to take a position on ownership and power, and to be specific about how that enables their proposal. The majority of the projects are envisioned as cooperatives or part of government.
Architecture in the traditional sense (building, structure, spatialization) has been hypothesized as-and-where it serves the goals of each student’s proposal. Some projects have explored the spatial implications at a conceptual level, while others have described a set of design principles. There were no requirements in this regard.
What new risks emerge in these futures? What tradeoffs? Do we want to live in these worlds? What do the proposals tell us about the challenges facing architecture as a discipline and a profession?
